This stately sandstone mansion built for Frank Whiddon in 1908 by architect Henry Wilshire, features exquisite period detail throughout including hand-drawn glass, lead-lighting and high patterned ceilings and a slate roof. The octagonal veranda has a pressed metal art nouveau-style decorative balustrade, a roughcast entrance porch and intact wainscoting. As well as the main residence, two additional buildings include a self-contained apartment and a chapel that could be used as a ballroom or billiard room.
The property incorporates expansive formal and informal living and dining areas, a breakfast room and a library. The sandstone used to build the home was quarried from the site.
The garden has significant features including a grotto.
Dalkeith was bought in the early 1950s by the Norwegian Church Abroad and became the Norwegian Seaman’s Mission, offering pastoral and community services to Scandinavian seaman until 1978 when it was purchased by Cheryl Rimmer for herself and her four daughters.
In 1995 it was featured in the multi-AFI award-winning black comedy Children Of The Revolution starring Sam Neill, Judy Davis, Geoffrey Rush and Racheal Griffiths.
